Unique are pleased to announce that Sam Johnstone has signed for Crystal Palace.
Johnstone, 29, played 37 times for West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season, winning both the Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, and remained a key part of the side in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign, at which point his contract came to an end.
Sam’s career began with Manchester United, enjoying successful loan spells with Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End and Aston Villa before a permanent switch to West Bromwich Albion in 2018.
Johnstone represented the Baggies on 167 occasions and saw out his contract before assessing his options this summer. During his time in the Midlands, Sam forced his way into the senior England set-up and went to the European Championship in 2021 when England went on a run to the final.
To-date, he has earned three caps.
Sam has now put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with Crystal Palace and will link up with Patrick Vieira’s side with immediate effect.
“Twenty-nine for goalkeepers is coming into your peak, and that’s where I am at the moment,” he said. “I had my loans growing up, and then did my first permanent move to West Brom for the last four years which was great, and now it’s time to do another step and go again.
“It’s a great opportunity for the lads to take on what they did last year into the new season and get higher up the table. The lads will have loved doing well last year, being a success and finishing in a good position in the Premier League.
“But as footballers, you want to better yourselves. I think that will be an aim for everyone at the club, all the players and the staff, to do it again – and better.”
Everybody at Unique wishes Sam the very best of luck with his next chapter at Crystal Palace.
